iFi iDSD Phantom Flapship DAC and Headphone Amplifier Network Streamer

Description

he iFi iDSD Phantom is a reference-class DAC, ultra-resolution streamer, and headphone amp built into a single home audio centerpiece. Built around four interleaved Burr-Brown DSD1793 DACs and a custom-coded field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the Phantom's DSD2048 Remastering technology natively decodes signals up to DSD2048 resolution, bringing playback closer to the sound of a professionally remastered recording. Real-time switching between discrete solid-state and tube amplification, the latter running on hand-matched, new-old-stock GE5670 valves, means the Phantom can move from lightning-fast precision to liquid, analog-style warmth at the turn of a dial, backed by up to 4,676mW of RMS balanced headphone output. Whether anchoring a listening room, driving a demanding pair of headphones at the desktop, or streaming via your favorite platforms, the iFi iDSD Phantom delivers a studio-grade listening experience wherever you set it up.

The beating heart of the iDSD Phantom's sound-shaping capability is a custom-coded FPGA, which powers its proprietary Crysopeia Remastering Engine. Four interleaved Burr-Brown DSD1793 DACs give the Phantom native DSD2048 decoding, a resolution previously reserved for the world’s most demanding mastering studios. The result isn't just a higher number on a spec sheet: it's audio that carries more of the smoothness, depth, and polish associated with a professionally remastered recording, applied in real time to whatever you're listening to.

K2 and K2HD restoration technologies

Licensed from JVCKENWOOD, K2 and K2HD restoration technologies recover harmonic detail lost when music is digitally compressed, bringing playback closer to the sound of the original master recording. K2 handles all supported PCM audio, while K2HD goes a step further on PCM audio up to 176.4kHz, extending high-frequency detail beyond what standard digital audio typically preserves. The iDSD Phantom handles the switch between the two automatically: feed it a PCM signal above 176.4kHz, and it shifts to standard K2 mode, then resumes K2HD mode once the sample rate drops back to 176.4kHz or below. K2HD only works with PCM files; native DSD playback bypasses this processing entirely.

Three voices in one amplifier

Most headphone amps give you one sound; the iDSD Phantom gives you three. Flip to Solid-State mode for fast, precise transients courtesy of discrete JFETs, or switch to Tube mode and let a pair of hand-matched, new-old-stock GE5670 valves take over for smoother, more relaxed listening. For the utmost tube character, Tube+ mode adds a 6dB boost to 2nd-order harmonics, imbuing the sound with even richer coloration. Sweetwater home audio experts were impressed by how well Tube+ mode captures the character of vintage hi-fi gear. Each mode draws on the same headphone amp section, capable of up to 4,676mW RMS and 7,747mW peak, easily enough power to drive full-size planar and dynamic headphones alike. Sensitive IEMs are covered too, with 0–18dB gain modes and a built-in iEMatch switch that keeps background hiss at bay.

Studio-caliber tone shaping

Beyond its three amplification modes, the Phantom includes a set of analog and digital tools for fine-tuning your sound. XBass Pro is a shelving-style bass EQ with 10Hz, 20Hz, and 40Hz settings to add low-end weight without affecting the midrange. XSpace Pro takes a different approach from typical crossfeed circuits: it widens the stereo image, making music feel like it's coming from a pair of speakers rather than headphones. XSpace Pro’s three settings let you match that widening effect to your headphones and preference. A bank of selectable digital filters rounds things out, giving you control over how the Phantom handles time-domain response. These modes and filters all run through a constant-impedance negative feedback design that keeps the EQ, spatial processing, and DSD remastering working together instead of jostling for space, so switching one on or off doesn't introduce any audible bumps or dropouts in your lower frequencies.

Stream everything, wired or otherwise

The Phantom connects to nearly every major streaming service, so there's no need to juggle separate hardware for separate platforms. Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, and AirPlay 2 are all built in, alongside support for locally stored files. While connecting via Ethernet offers the most stable streaming experience, setup and day-to-day control via iFi's Nexis app can pair the Phantom to your home Wi-Fi network over Bluetooth, giving you a central place to manage connected storage, streamer settings, and firmware updates as they roll out. Wired sources also receive a full suite of digital inputs and network isolation to keep your source clean and your setup free from electrical noise.
